Explanation (?):

The Windows Future Storage service is the prelude to the Windows File System (WinFS). This is commonly considered a new file system that will debut in Windows codename Longhorn, but really it is a databasing engine that is applied on top of the NT File System. The features provided by WinFS will be similar, but much more complex, to those provided by the Indexing Service. Most of the features provided by this service can be used through Win32 API calls. This will allow queries to be made that will retrieve linked documents based on many criteria; such as filename, author, length, etc.

To the normal person this conceptual file system addon is not that important, but unless you are running a prerelease of Longhorn then this service is of no consequence. Although, if you are running Longhorn then you can safely disable this service at the expense of losing what little functionality the service currently provides.
